The Little Black List's Guide to Vintage Shopping

Super chic StyledOn member, blogger and vintage guru, Tess Pare-Mayer shares her tips for shopping vintage as well as her six top spots to shop in the city.

For as long as I can remember, I've worn vintage clothing. It started when I was in diapers and sporting my older brothers' "hand me down" tie-dyed cloud onesie with a vibrant red heart on the chest. In eighth grade, it continued with my long, black sequined "tea dress" at Redwood Middle School. Currently, my uniform of choice involves vintage fur coats, bags, boots, oversized dresses belted with (what else?) a used, beat up, ancient belt.

Vintage shopping has always come naturally to me—probably because I had the best teacher (my mother) guiding me and helping me alter any oversized or unflattering silhouette. For those who crave the thrill of finding a piece of fashion history for a fraction of the original price without ending up lost in a sea of used clothing, read below for my five tips for shopping vintage, as well as six of my favorite stores in New York City to get you started.

Luckily it wasn't quite as cold so my knit dress and double layered tights along with a vintage fur was warm enough. But let's face it. If you don't HAVE to deal with the cold why would you???? ON that note I'm headed down to sunny LA, and San Diego. Sayonara NY. See you Tuesday.

beacon closet

As I said I am writing a piece for Styledon.com about vintage shopping. So living in BK now, an obvious choice was beacon's closet. Its a sea of vintage, new, used, costumey treats. If you take your time you're sure to find gems like this studded bedazzled leather jacket, or this long, neon pink, beaded tulle dress. I didn't purchase either because lets face it, Its cold as sh*t in New York now and I've got no where to wear either. Make sure to check in for their post about my shopping extravaganzas. And I will link it here on my site. Stay warm New Yorkers, and see you soon sunny California...wink wink

My uniform for the dreary winters in NY includes: leggings with wool tights underneath, a long baggy t-shirt, sweater or blouse (not shown today), a floppy beenie, and a huge fuzzy vintage fur coat. It was luckily warm enough to wear these combat looking peep toe booties, but normally I would have to pair them with some form of sock, or just wear closed toe all together :( There's a better shot of my new hair color although still not soooo obvious. I will try to get a better image this weekend. While I dream of warm beaches, cut off shorts, tank tops and warm breezes...uhh winter has only just begun. Lets guess how long I last till I venture off to California???

Hi to all my lovely readers,
I've received numerous emails and comments asking me where I find my vintage clothing, antique jewelry, and all my sequins...and I'm going to tell you, just not yet. wink wink. I am actually collaborating with Styledon.com to write "the little black list's guide to thrifting". It will launch Friday November 12th. So make sure to check their site, and mine as well. Also I'm working on a new project that will link my site to my own personal online store where you will actually be able to buy The little black list's clothing...(who woulda thought???) Back to work now. Will post new photos tomorrow :)

Voila! Here is my Halloween costume. I was clinically insane, not a far stretch from my regular self. ha ha ha. I attended the anual BRAHA-Halloween bash this year at Oak Room in the Plaza (pictures to come). I danced, laughed and drank my ass off. What do you think of my costume, funny and my hair????
